Pimlico School Renovations & Additions
Baltimore, Maryland
Project Scope & Results: The Pimlico Elementary and Middle School project includes the full renovation and modernization of 78,000 square feet of the existing building as well as a 40,000 square foot addition. The original school building is going to be rebuilt and will support the elementary portion while the middle school will be in the 1924 building. The goal is to create a 21st-century learning environment while maintaining the original historic buildings.
On J.D Belfield’s portion of the project, we have worked with Patuxent Engineering Group to develop a custom fabricated retention system to stabilize the 1910 historic façade. This custom design also accommodates an exterior Bracing System that accommodates the demolition of the existing slab on grade, floor framing, & roof systems. Our Façade Bracing System does not interfere with any of the elements required for the new construction (ex. New Footings, Columns, Floor Beams, Roof Framing, Etc.)
In an effort to preserve the exterior façade, all custom fabricated connections were designed to clamp to the exterior walls so that zero penetrations were required thru the historic fabric. Wood blocking was used as a buffer between our fabricated steel system and the façade so that no damage occurred to the historic brick. Also, ballast was installed around the building to resolve anticipated wind loads during the reconstruction of the interior structure and is also positioned to accommodate future excavation & waterproofing around the exterior foundation.
